Forgive me if this is a bit of a personal indulgence, but I had a couple of great moments with my grandsons last weekend. As much as we talk about the need to discipline ourselves and learn “to walk with the Lord” or to control our habits or develop a skill, nothing takes the place of slow and steady discipline.
One of my grandsons, Luke, plays soccer and the other one, Jack, plays baseball. Their dad and a next-door-neighbor have been working with them on their skills and I’ve been simply supplying some encouragement and a few tools along the way.
This past Saturday, Luke scored two goals in the last soccer game of the season! It was the brightest moment of his very young athletic career. Then, that evening, Jack hit a homerun all the way to the wall of the T-ball field! Our next door neighbor said “it was the longest hit he’d ever seen in a t-ball game.”
Needless to say, there’s a little bit of personal pride in all of this, but more than anything there’s the reminder that practice and discipline simply bring out the best in all of us no matter what they’re applied to and it’s exciting when such fruit is evident, as fundamental and perhaps basic as these two little stories reveal.
