Just as our staff was gathering for a post Easter celebration lunch, one of the smoke detectors went off in part of our building and created an orderly evacuation of that section of our facility. As it turns out, this was not a "drill" but a malfunction of a certain controlling device that caused one of the mechanical pieces to overheat.
Nobody was in any danger and things were restored to order in less than an hour, but the fire department was called out and a full report will be filed.
The whole event reminded me that so many times in life we have "false alarms" and tend to ignore them (as was the case with this incident at first) but we never know when we really need to be ready to act. This is true of our physical bodies, our relationships and most especially our walk with the Lord. There are times when God is trying to get our attention and we consider it simply a "test" when in fact what He wants is to let us know that something serious is going on in our lives and He wants to alert us to it.
This was true when God spoke to Samuel and numerous other biblical figures. I wonder if it's true of you and me as well. Remember, more than anything God wants to know us and sometimes things happen that are just false alarms, but we can never afford to ignore them for when the Lord speaks we want to be sure to hear His voice!
