In preparing for this weekend's message, I've re-read portions of one of my favorites books, “From Shadow to Substance” by Roy Hession. His primary point is that most of us lead our Christian lives with just a “shadow” of the realities of what Jesus is meant to be for us. We see him simply in fleeting glimpses, usually taken on the run because we live life at such a frenetic pace that we don’t slow down enough to really hear his voice to us.
As you lean into these summer months, I hope you’ll join with me in making the time to discover the real substance of who Jesus is to be in your life, even if it’s just in one or two specific areas.
The reality is that shadows all have form and seem intriguing yet there’s nothing to them. They vanish as quickly as the sun can go behind a cloud.
Our Lord is not that way. He’s always there and more than willing to be all that you need in every moment of life’s grand encounters. I hope this summer will be one when you’ll move from “shadow to substance”.
